Richard Hambleton — Shadow of a Legend
On 29 October 2017, the night before Halloween, Richard Hambleton — the “Godfather of Street Art” and the mind behind the
Shadowmen — passed away. His spectres, flung in bitumen and tar onto alley walls and gallery canvas alike, changed how the city could look
back at us. Hambleton’s influence runs like a dark artery through contemporary image-making: the staged shock of encounter, the after-image that
clings to the eye, the glamour and ruin of New York’s downtown era.
To mark his death day and the spirit of this season, Memento Carne opens in dialogue with Hambleton’s legacy — presence versus absence,
body versus shadow — and the artists who carry that charge forward.
Exhibiting Artists
RYAN HOLLOWAY
Ryan Holloway is a Brighton-based figurative and portrait artist whose work explores the nuances of human emotion and identity. After a 15-year career in entertainment publicity, he returned to painting, drawing on his early studies in Art & Design and Media Studies. His portraits focus less on literal likeness and more on capturing the essence and uniqueness of his subjects.
HAUS OF LUCY
Haus of Lucy reimagines kitsch figurines and landscapes with sharp humour — from porcelain boys in Adidas hoodies to EasyJet planes in pastoral skies to darker, gothic transformations. Commissions include Adidas, Lazy Oaf, and Greggs × Primark.
FELIX TAYLOR
Felix Taylor is a figurative and landscape painter whose work explores the vulnerability and anxiety of his generation amid an uncertain future. Through oil painting, he connects the fragility of human identity with the equally threatened landscape, often placing solitary figures within void-like spaces as metaphors for emotional and social turmoil.
BROKEN BY DESIGN
Leigh-Anna’s practice grew from her own battles with addiction and mental health, transforming into assemblage and mosaic work that gives discarded objects new life. Her art is rooted in remembrance, recovery, and reinvention.
BETHAN HAMILTON
Bethan Hamilton examines female identity, motherhood, and spirituality through drawing and printmaking. She has also designed hand-drawn tarot and oracle decks funded through Kickstarter, blending art with divination.
PANSY BELLE
Pansy Belle Searle’s work is dedicated to the memory of her son Florian, exploring love, loss, and motherhood as both grief and healing. A Fine Art graduate from the University of Brighton, she continues to develop a practice rooted in resilience and remembrance.
NATALIE PAPAMICHAEL
Of Greek and French heritage, Natalie Papamichael combines painting, performance, and wearable art to challenge censorship and political silencing. Influenced by feminist artists and classic films, she creates bold, self-referential narratives.
MAIRI LAWTHER
Mairi Lawther is a Brighton-based printmaker whose work is inspired by travel, architecture, and matrescence. Living by the sea with her partner, daughter, and cat, she creates prints from home, informed by her background in Fine Art.
