Clarke Reynolds, known professionally as Mr Dot, is a British artist transforming Braille into a distinctive visual and tactile language. His work brings colour, touch and storytelling together, challenging the traditional idea that art is something experienced through sight alone.
Biography
Clarke Reynolds, known professionally as Mr Dot, is a British artist whose practice places Braille at the centre of contemporary visual art.
Growing up in Portsmouth, Reynolds developed an interest in art from childhood. He later studied model making and design before working as a dental model maker. As his sight deteriorated, his relationship with creativity changed with it.
Discovering Braille became a defining point in his artistic development. Rather than treating the dot simply as a system of reading, Reynolds began exploring its potential as an artistic building block — capable of creating image, language, pattern and narrative.
The resulting works are designed to operate across sight and touch. Colourful from a distance and tactile at close range, they invite different audiences to experience the same artwork in different ways.
Through the character of Mr Dot, Reynolds has extended this practice beyond the gallery. His work encompasses exhibitions, public projects, education, talks and advocacy, using art to open conversations around Braille, blindness and accessibility.

The Art of Braille
Braille is traditionally understood as a reading system. In Reynolds' work, it becomes material.
Individual raised dots are used much like the marks of a painter or the pixels of a digital image. Accumulated across a surface, they form portraits, symbols, words and familiar imagery while retaining their tactile function.
This creates an unusual duality. A sighted viewer may first encounter colour, composition and image; a Braille reader can encounter language through touch. Neither experience is treated as secondary.
The result is an artistic language concerned not simply with representation, but with how an artwork is accessed in the first place.

AspexA full-circle moment Reynolds has exhibited at Aspex in Portsmouth — the gallery he visited as a child and credits as an important early influence on his desire to become an artist. He later became a trustee of the organisation.

EducationMr Dot in schools Through workshops and school visits, Reynolds uses art to introduce children to Braille while challenging assumptions surrounding sight loss and disability.

2025Mr Dot and His Magical White Cane Adventures Reynolds created an inclusive children's book combining conventional print and illustration with Braille, allowing sighted and visually impaired readers to experience the same publication.

2026Brighton Marathon Reynolds completed the Brighton Marathon using smart glasses connected to remote Be My Eyes volunteers, raising funds and awareness for Fight for Sight.

2026Brighton Butterfly Trail Mr Dot created a Braille butterfly as part of Brighton's North Laine butterfly trail in support of The Lily Foundation, bringing tactile art into the public realm while raising awareness of mitochondrial disease.
Mr Dot at Indelible
Indelible Fine Art works closely with Mr Dot, presenting a selection of his tactile Braille artworks and supporting projects that extend his practice beyond the traditional gallery space.
His work sits naturally within Indelible's interest in artists with an immediately recognisable visual language. Each piece combines image and communication, allowing Braille to become part of the composition rather than an addition to it.
