Gary Ray Smith
Painter · Knitter · Storyteller · Brighton cult favourite.
Biography
Gary Ray Smith is a Brighton-based painter and textile artist whose practice sits somewhere between British humour, outsider art, and a deep, instinctive understanding of colour and character. Working across paint, pencil and wool, he builds a world that is instantly recognisable — populated by sailors, dreamers, bruised romantics, and his iconic creation: Claude.
His work straddles playfulness and poignancy. Every piece feels disarmingly honest, shaped by lived experience, real emotion, and a wicked sense of humour. Nothing is polished for the sake of it; the charm comes from personality, not perfection.
Over the last few years, Smith has cultivated a devoted following. Collectors range from Brighton locals to international buyers — from quiet art lovers to celebrities — all drawn to the warmth and raw sincerity of his work.
Oi Oi Sailor
*Oi Oi Sailor* began as a playful drawing and quickly evolved into one of Gary’s most recognisable series. Mixing nostalgia, cheekiness and emotional honesty, the works capture the humour and vulnerability of British seaside culture — equal parts postcard comedy and genuine longing.
The dedicated Oi Oi Sailor exhibition at Indelible Fine Art showcased the full narrative arc of the character, bringing together original works, knitted pieces, notes, and early concept sketches.
