Welcome Mat, created in 2019, is a politically charged work that combines Banksy’s characteristic visual simplicity with a direct commentary on migration, displacement and the treatment of refugees.
The work takes the familiar form of a domestic welcome mat and transforms it through its materials and message. Fabric from life jackets abandoned on Mediterranean beaches is incorporated into the design, connecting an everyday object associated with hospitality and arrival to the experiences of people making dangerous journeys across the Mediterranean.
The word “WELCOME” is worked into the surface, creating a deliberate tension between the promise of hospitality and the realities faced by displaced people seeking safety. Through this contrast, Banksy turns an ordinary household object into a wider reflection on borders, compassion and society’s response to migration.
Welcome Mat was produced in collaboration with refugees living at the Vathy camp on the Greek island of Samos, with the mats hand-stitched locally as part of an initiative intended to provide financial support and employment.
Created in 2019, Welcome Mat demonstrates Banksy’s ability to move beyond conventional prints and paintings, using material, context and social intervention as integral parts of the artwork.
