Boxer Rebellion brings together many of the visual elements that made Jean-Michel Basquiat one of the defining artists of the twentieth century: expressive figures, fragmented text, symbols and energetic mark-making.
The composition takes its title from the Boxer Rebellion of 1899–1901 in China. Basquiat draws upon history alongside his characteristic network of words, figures and signs, creating a densely layered image concerned with conflict, power, resistance and cultural history.
The raw immediacy of the figures and handwritten elements is characteristic of Basquiat’s practice during the early 1980s, a period in which his distinctive visual language rapidly established him as a major figure in contemporary art.
This screenprint was published posthumously in 2018 by Flatiron Editions in collaboration with the Estate of Jean-Michel Basquiat, after the original work of 1982–83. Issued in a limited edition of just 60, it translates one of Basquiat’s powerful early compositions into a highly limited collector’s edition.
