Nūr Jahān (H10-2) forms part of Damien Hirst’s celebrated The Empresses series, a collection of five works named after powerful and influential female rulers from history.

The work takes its name from Nūr Jahān, the influential Mughal empress who became one of the most powerful women of the seventeenth-century Mughal court. Renowned for her political influence, cultural patronage and authority, she provides a fitting namesake for a series exploring female power and historical legacy.

Hirst constructs the composition using his iconic butterfly motif, arranging butterfly wings into an intricate, highly symmetrical pattern. The kaleidoscopic structure creates an immediate sense of movement and visual intensity while continuing Hirst’s longstanding exploration of beauty, transformation, life and mortality.
