The Empresses is a complete series of five striking works by Damien Hirst, each named after an influential female ruler from history and united by the artist’s celebrated use of the butterfly.
Across the series, intricate arrangements of butterfly wings are transformed into highly symmetrical, kaleidoscopic compositions. Their intense colour and elaborate patterning create an immediate sense of beauty, while continuing Hirst’s longstanding exploration of life, death, transformation and the fragile nature of existence.
The five works — Wu Zetian, Nūr Jahān, Theodora, Suiko and Taytu Betul — take their names from powerful women whose influence challenged the conventions of their respective eras. By bringing these historical figures together with the butterfly, Hirst creates a series centred on ideas of power, beauty, freedom and transformation.
Produced as laminated Giclée prints on aluminium composite and finished with screen-printed glitter, the works possess an extraordinary luminosity and physical presence. Light interacts with the glittered surfaces and intricate butterfly patterns, allowing the compositions to shift and intensify as they are viewed from different positions.
