Throughout his career, Bell drew deeply on the natural world, particularly the dramatic landscapes, changing light and elemental forces of Cornwall. Rather than depicting a particular place literally, he translated the experience of landscape into abstraction, allowing colour, shape and gesture to convey atmosphere and physical sensation.
In this work, Bell’s confident handling of oil and strong compositional structure create a dynamic relationship between form and space.
