Description
Taken during Blur's first visit to Japan, Tokyo Drift captures the vibrant energy of Tokyo's streets through Dave Rowntree's documentary lens. Following the flow of pedestrians through a maze of neon signs, shopfronts and towering advertisements, the photograph places the viewer in the heart of a city that left a lasting impression on the band.
Rather than focusing on his bandmates, Rowntree turns his attention to the atmosphere of the city itself. The anonymous businessman carrying his briefcase, the crowds moving through the streets and the unmistakable glow of Tokyo's commercial districts combine to create a photograph that is as much about place as it is about time. It reflects the curiosity and excitement of a young band discovering a culture entirely different from their own.
As both drummer and photographer, Rowntree documented not only Blur's performances but the experiences that surrounded them. His photographs offer an authentic visual diary of life on tour, preserving the destinations, encounters and fleeting moments that shaped the band's early international travels.
Printed as an archival pigment print on Somerset Satin Enhanced 330gsm, Tokyo Drift is a compelling blend of documentary photography and travel imagery. Rich in atmosphere and nostalgia, it is an exceptional addition for collectors of contemporary photography, music history and images that celebrate the character of one of the world's most iconic cities.
